Hops-the flavor that keeps us HOPpy

Posted by Barry Kukes on

All beer enthusiasts know the importance of Hops in the beer making process. But last week a friend of mine asked me why Hops are that important to beer making and whether or not he would need to buy them in order to make the perfect beer. Since I am a long time beer maker, I responded, "Of course, hops are essential to the beer making process."

For those of you who are new to making beer, hops are the flowers of the hop plant called the Humulus Lupulus. The reason why hops are essential to beer making is because hops give beer flavor and stability. The hops impart bitter, zesty or citric flavors into the beer, making the beer refreshing and enjoyable. Not only do hops give beer a yummy taste, they also help to preserve the life of beer. Pellet hops are dried cones which are shredded and compressed into pellets. Some people say the pellets resemble rabbit food, but don't feed the pellets to rabbits unless they are 21.

G. Francis "Cascade" and "Chinook" Organic Pellet Hops for Home or Professional Brewing are two major must haves for anyone brewing beer. These are USDA organic pelletized hops from a Northwest Iowa family farm, harvested in August of 2016 (Star Sister Hops). Nitrogen purged at the time of harvest and frozen until the time of shipment to ensure quality, freshness, and aroma. Chinook hops have a strong and distinct pine-like aroma and are ideal for use in pale ales, stouts, and American IPAs, and barleywine. Mildly spicy along with a hint of citrus. Alpha acid ranging from 12-14%, beta acid ranging from 3-4.5%. Pelletized hops are shipped in a vacuum packed, air free sealed package, a must have for any home or professional brewer.
